It has been a while since we spoke about our A to Z initiative. This does not mean we have not been working on it! If you have not heard about it before The A to Z is an Urbanknit initiative which will donate proceeds from sales of bags, totes, cushions, clutches made from upcycled, repurposed, recycled fabrics to assist charities and local schools in Nigeria (which is where the fabric is currently from). Our own way of making a (creative) contribution. Every product that is part of the initiative will have an orange label to identify it as being that extra special. The full range available can be found with the A to Z Initiative tag.
We have a set of newly listed Pink Cushions Aso-Oke cushions in our Etsy store which are all part of the initiative. So if you are looking for large, bold, pink cushions then please consider these. Its a win win situation! You can order it with or without the cushion pad.

As usual, we’d love to hear what you think.
A couple of years ago we started the A to Z Initiative where we upcycle fabric into new products. The idea is to make use of fabric that is still in good condition in products in the Urbanknit store. We then donate part of the proceeds from the sale of these items to particular charities that are close to our hearts.
For this particular tote, the Aso-oke fabric for the outer fabric as well as the Ankara lining where both donated. Thank you Laitan and Mrs S! The Tommy tote makes a great beach bag and also serves as a great alternative to plastic bags when you go grocery shipping at the supermarket. It also makes a great weekend bag.
The Tommy tote is roomy and comfortable to carry due to the wide straps. It also has 3 large inner pockets to store smaller items for easier retrieval.

As a follow up on our introduction of the A to Z initiative (where we donate proceeds from products made with upcycled, recycled fabric to a chosen charity), we have recently chosen to support LOTS charity in Ajegunle, Lagos State, Nigeria.
There is so much need in the world and sometimes it may seem as though we can’t do anything about. Well I believe strongly that ANY contribution no matter how seemingly small always makes a greater difference than we imagine.
I have had the opportunity of meeting the special people that set up and run this charity and the beautiful amazing children they are supporting. There are no words to describe the experience but it has left a strong and lasting desire to support them in our own way.

The A to Z initiative started just over a year ago and we are pushing for even more support this year.
In Nigeria, the tradition for special occasions is that friends and family often wear attire that is of the same fabric as the celebrant’s. This is called ‘Aso-ebi‘. It is a way of showing solidarity, support, oneness. It used to be that people would say ‘Please wear Alaari to my daughter’s wedding’ for example. (Alaari is a type of Aso-oke, a hand-woven fabric which often ranges between deep red and magenta in colour). So if you had one like it, which you probably would, you’d just wear it.
In more recent times people often buy brand new fabric or have a large quantity custom-made and sent out to friends and family to have made into their own individual outfits. So on the day, there is an array of dresses, tops, blouses, shirts and what not all in the same fabric. It makes for very interesting viewing!
After my long ramble I get to the point! A lot of people end up with a lot of Aso-ebi that they no longer wear and as a way of doing a little bit to help, I have taken donations of such fabric. These will be used to make part of or an entire new accessory.
The A to Z is an Urbanknit initiative which will donate proceeds from sales of bags, totes, clutches made from these upcycled, repurposed, recycled fabrics to assist orphanages and local schools in Lagos State, Nigeria. Our own way of making a (creative) contribution. Every product that is part of the initiative will have the orange label. The full range available can be found with the A to Z Initiative tag.
We will have periodic updates as to what we are able to accomplish with our contributions. We would love to know what you think!
